“After Dark” to niespełniona obietnica, iluzja tego co nadciąga, a czego nie można zobaczy. Prace artystek Nory Aurrekoextei oraz Patricii Orpilli reprezentują dwie odmienne interpretacje stanu oraz materii. Twórczynie uciekają się do mylącej mocy abstrakcji i tajemnicy zmierzchu: utkane nici oraz plecione włosy układają się w dwuznaczne skojarzenia.
Rzeźbiarka Aurrekoetxea bada enigmatyczne kształty peruki w obiektach wykonanych w technice druku 3D. Konotacja siły fizycznej, wiedzy oraz seksualności w pracy “Pole” składającej się ze stylizowanych loków oraz metalowego drążka pole dance, przywołują obraz tancerki w ruchu. Podczas gdy praca “Cascade” to równoległe wydarzenie oglądane z poziomu gruntu. Te figlarne aranżacje zarysowują ukrytą moc dekoracji połączoną z jej przejmującą materialnością.
Perukopodobne nakrycia głowy zestawione zostały z lekkimi kolagrafiami, najnowszymi pracami Orpilli – wystawianymi po raz pierwszy w Polsce. Odbite widma niewidocznych tkanin, łączą się z geometrycznymi figurami oraz żywymi kolorami. Wyraziste wątki i osnowy odsłaniają materiał nawiązując jednocześnie do struktury języka. Każda kompozycja opowiada mikrohistorię, a powtarzający się motyw koła odnosi się do powidoków i naturalnego zjawiska rozpraszania światła słonecznego, nadającego mu intensywniejsze barwy o zmroku.
↦ Nora Aurrekoetxea tworzy obiekty oraz instalacje, często pracuje z tematyką piękna i siły. Ukończyła rzeźbę na Royal College of Art w Londynie z tytułem magistra, oraz studia podyplomowe z seksuologi na In.Ci.Sex w Madrycie, obecnie jest laureatką rezydencji w Rijksakademie w Amsterdamie.

“After Dark” is an unfulfilled promise, a fantasy of what’s to come and what we cannot see. Beginning with works from artists Nora Aurrekoetxea and Patricia Orpilla the exhibition sees two different interpretations of a mood and a material, or despite it. Woven threads or strands of hair string together associations rather than explicit meanings, each artist playing with the obscuring power of abstraction and the magic of twilight.
Aurrekoetxea, a sculptor, explores the enigmatic shape of the wig with 3d printed plastic sculptures. Connoting physical strength, knowledge, and sexuality; styled locks combine with a metal rod in ‘Pole’ to evoke a vision of a dancer in motion. While ‘Cascade,’ represents a parallel scene, viewed at ground level. With a poignant materiality these playful arrangements reveal the hidden power of ornament.
The wig-like headdresses are juxtaposed with lightweight collagraphs, a suite of recent works by Orpilla– exhibiting for the first time in Poland. Printed ghosts of unseen fabrics combine with geometric figures and vivid atmospheres of color. Weft and warp, visible in the prints, reveal the material while referencing the structure of language. Each composition tells a micro-story; the repeated motif of the circle referring to afterimages and the natural phenomenon of scattering light, which makes the sun most radiant at nightfall.
↦ Nora Aurrekoetxea creates objects and installations, frequently exploring themes of beauty and power. Receiving an MFA in sculpture from the Royal College of Art, Aurrekoetxea completed postgrad research in Sexology in Madrid and is currently an artist in residence at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam.

↦ Patricia Orpilla, based in New York, looks at material metaphors in her multidisciplinary painting practice. Exploring the cross pollination of language and visual art, Orpilla graduated from Yale with an MFA in Painting/Printmaking and will be a 2024 fellow at Bard Graduate Center.

↦ Gerard Lebik is a sound artist, improviser/composer, saxophonist. Artistic director and curator of the Sanatorium of Sound Festival in Sokołowsko, Poland. Works with experimental, improvised, and intermedia music focused on issues such as the perception and propagation of sound waves, time disorder, psychoacoustic, or sound relation with architecture and urban context.
